47% reduction in Clostridioides difficile recurrence — S. boulardii endorsed in WGO & ESPGHAN clinical guidelines for C. difficile and AAD management.

The science

Why Boulardii works.

Boulardii (Saccharomyces boulardii) is the yeast-based probiotic with demonstrated evidence of its efficacy in preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea, along with a 47% reduction in Clostridioides difficile recurrence (Based on published references).

Owing to its eukaryotic nature, S. boulardii is naturally resistant to both gastric acid and antibiotics, allowing it to remain effective even when taken concurrently with antibiotic therapy.

S. boulardii is specifically recognised in major clinical guidelines (WGO and ESPGHAN) for the management of C. difficile infection and prevention of traveler's diarrhea in both adults and children.

Mechanism of action

How it works, step by step.

The documented biological pathway — exactly how each component acts inside the body.

01

Saccharomyces boulardii offers powerful protection against C. difficile through multiple proven mechanisms: It secretes a specialised 54 kDa serine protease that proteolytically cleaves the receptor-binding domain of C. difficile toxins A and B. This prevents the toxins from attaching to intestinal cells, effectively blocking damage and inflammation (Based on cited literature).

02

At the same time, S. boulardii strengthens the intestinal barrier by upregulating key tight-junction proteins — ZO-1 and occludin — while stimulating the production of secretory IgA. These actions work together to fortify the mucosal lining and enhance natural immune defense (Based on cited literature).
